چکیده

A comparative assessment of the post-closure environmental issues for the geological disposal of carbon dioxide (CO2) and radioactive waste is made in this chapter. Several criteria are used: the characteristics of radioactive waste and CO2; their potential environmental impacts; an assessment of the hazards arising from radioactive waste and CO2; and monitoring of their environmental impacts. There are several differences in the way that the long term safety of the disposal of radioactive waste and CO2 is regulated and evaluated. While the regulatory procedures relating to the development of a facility for the disposal of radioactive waste in many countries with nuclear power programmes are well defined having evolved over several decades, those relating to CO2 disposal are less well developed. The results of this assessment show that, despite key differences, many of the approaches addressing environmental issues are similar. Additionally, much can be learnt from the radioactive waste disposal experience which will be particularly relevant to the assessments of site performance for CO2 within a regulatory framework, particularly in the methods and approaches to long term site performance assessment.

Decontamination of Heavy Metal in Soil by Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Due to an increase of the nuclear power plant, radioactive waste is also increasing trend and due to the large amount of radioactive waste disposal costs also increase. Decontamination of soil contamination is depending on the soil characteristics and environmental factor, so single decontamination method is difficult for effective decontamination. We need innovative method to decontamination, ...

Influence of hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria on the corrosion of low carbon steel: Local electrochemical investigations.

Low carbon steel has been considered a suitable material for component of the multi-barrier system employed on the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). A non negligible amount of dihydrogen (H2) is expected to be produced over the years within the geological repository due to the anoxic corrosion of metallic materials and also to the water radiolysis. The influence of the ...

An Approach to Modelling the Impact of 14 C Release from Reactor Graphite in a Geological Disposal Facility 2

7 Carbon-14 (C-14) is a key radionuclide in the assessment of a geological 8 disposal facility (GDF) for radioactive waste. In the UK a significant proportion of 9 the national C-14 inventory is associated with reactor core graphite generated by 10 the decommissioning of the UK’s Magnox and AGR reactors. 11 There are a number of uncertainties associated with the fate and transport of 12 C-14 in...

Radiological dose assessment of naturally occurring radioactive materials generated by the petroleum industry in wildlife: A case study of chinkaras of Lavan Island, Iran

Human activities such as oil and gas production can enhance the natural level of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in by-product and waste streams. Iran has been among the top five oil producing countries since 2005. This high production rate emphasizes the importance of NORM management to ensure the safety of humans and wildlife. Petroleum storage and transport facilities are lo...

The enrichment of an alkaliphilic biofilm consortia capable of the anaerobic degradation of isosaccharinic acid from cellulosic materials incubated within an anthropogenic, hyperalkaline environment.

Anthropogenic hyperalkaline sites provide an environment that is analogous to proposed cementitious geological disposal facilities (GDF) for radioactive waste. Under anoxic, alkaline conditions cellulosic wastes will hydrolyze to a range of cellulose degradation products (CDP) dominated by isosaccharinic acids (ISA). In order to investigate the potential for microbial activity in a cementitious...
